In April 2017 Twitter introduced its data saving application called Twitter Lite. Since then, it was only available as a bookmark that acts as an app through Google Chrome, but eventually, in December it was launched as a separate application on Google Play in 24 markets.
Twitter announced on Monday it is expanding its Lite application to 21 more countries including Kenya, making it available in 45 countries total. Twitter Lite was designed for devices running on slower connections by allowing a data saver mode that controls which content gets loaded. Its size is 3MB allowing the app to load more quickly.
The social media giant wanted to boost the number of subscribers by launching Twitter Lite as well as to expand more quickly into the emerging markets. Among the new countries that can use the app are Argentina, Belarus, Indonesia, and Kenya.
Twitter said in a blog post that it wants to remain “relevant, useful, and dependable,” adding that “With Twitter Lite, you can get real-time updates on news, sports, entertainment, politics, and other topics that matter most to you, without having to sacrifice on data or storage.”
